Started as a “pop up” restaurant in a dingy old chinese restaurant, with which it still shares a kitchen and dining area, Mission Chinese Food has gone on to become one of the best restaurants in a foodie city, San Francisco. In GQ, Alan Richman named it one of the best new restaurants in America and Danny Bowien, the head chef, was named on of the top three chefs in the U.S. by the New York Times – For all of you on the other coast, don’t fret, this young restaurant will see a second location open up in New York City later this year.

Of the many things that came out of Ball Culture, the most prominent may be the creation of Voguing. We all recognize the appropriation by Madonna, but what might not be known is that voguing had actually been evolving in the gay bars and drag shows of Harlem since the 60′s.

The Queen of Disco, Sylvester James, started out as a gospel child star in Los Angeles, but really started cultivating his identity after moving to San Francisco in the late 60′s. Soon after he joined the psychedelic drag group, The Cockettes (another notable member was Divine, of John Waters fame). Without a doubt the best singer of the group, Sylvester stood out with his powerful voice and fervent personality and soon became a luminary of the Disco scene.

He also helped spur the careers of other black artists of the time, including The Pointer Sisters and The Weather Girls, both of which were his back up singers at different times.

We encourage you to listen to the music (although his record covers are almost as cool) of the gender-bending provocateur, which forced San Francisco and the world to “dance in the disco heat.”

Benjamin Mohapi was a definitive force at last month’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Take a behind the scenes look at him working on some of the season’s top shows.

This is one of our favourite Anjelica Huston films. It’s based on Roald Dahl’s book of the same name so maybe it’s a children’s film? But it’s definitely weird, has undeniable Jim Henson touches, and it is absolutely terrifying to watch as a child.

Anjelica Huston’s rustic Irish soda bread

Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 55 minutes
Makes: 1 large round loaf, 20 servings
You may use whole milk instead of buttermilk, but you will need to substitute baking powder for the baking soda.

3 cups whole wheat flour

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon brown sugar

2 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 to 1 1/4 cups buttermilk

2 tablespoons shortening or butter, melted

1/3 cup rolled oats

Heat oven to 450 degrees. Sift dry ingredients together into a large bowl, except for the oats. Combine 1 cup of the buttermilk and the shortening in a bowl; stir into dry ingredients, mixing slowly to make a thick dough. Add more of the buttermilk, if needed. Add oats; mix until just combined.

Knead dough briefly on a floured surface; form into a round shape. Transfer to a greased baking sheet. Make a cross on the top with the wrong edge of a knife. Bake 10 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 375 degrees. Bake until brown and firm, about 45 minutes.

NBC gets a bad rap. It’s constantly getting the worst ratings of the big four and has some really terrible shows on it’s lineup (how is this still on?), but we have a soft spot for a gay peacock who can bring us gems like 30 Rock, The Office, Parks and Rec, and Community. And okay, yes, Law and Order, you caught us.

But this month NBC takes a leap into the musical television field, which until now has been monopolized by stupid high schoolers-played-by-25-year-olds. And we like it. Kinda.

Firstly, Anjelica Huston stars as one of the leads, so that was enough to get us to watch the pre-release of the pilot episode, but we stuck around for the strong cast full of veteran screen actors and actual Broadway stars. Although Smash took a huge risk in saddling the show on a pop singer’s shoulders, we found Katherine McPhee… not terrible. In fact she was pretty likeable.

The show’s subject matter, Marilyn Monroe, seems too trite to try, and the plot looks to be completely predictable – even still, we’re excited to see a musical series that gives us all those warm and fuzzy feelings of a broadway show, yet is smart enough not to resort to absurd plots and unfunny devices like constant slushy-in-face, especially when you can rely on the comedic genius of your cast.

Anjelica Huston commands so much power on screen. And we don’t care what you say, we will watch a movie, no matter how awful, even if Anjelica only makes a cameo. She has made some of our favourite films, we love her relationship with Wes Anderson, her name is spelled weirdly but it doesn’t annoy us, and she’s starring in the new musical drama Smash.
